ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- With the college football season only three weeks away, the starting quarterback for Notre Dame has still not been announced.
The Fighting Irish begin as number seven in the coaches’ pre-season poll rankings without an official name set for the team’s starting quarterback position.
However, Head Coach Brian Kelly says the future starter to be named must have special characteristics that sets him apart.
“You know he’s got to be able to disperse the football down the field, he’s got to have accuracy in making those throws. We’ve always felt like the quarterback has got to be the brains of this operation,” said Kelly.
Although Jack Coan and Drew Pyne seem to be the realistic options for the role, Kelly has been praising the development of freshman Tyler Buchner as well.
Following today’s practice, Kelly had great comments on the attributes of Coan.
“He’s been a really good leader. Our guys respect him and have really followed him. And, as you know, that’s really hard to do when you’re only here for a short period of time as a transfer. Really, he’s done more than a lot of us had even expected,” Kelly said.
ABC57 will be airing the Irish’s first game of the season with the ABC57 Kickoff Crew on the road in Tallahassee before Notre Dame takes on Florida State on September 5.
