Notre Dame holds pep rally Friday night
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame is set to kick off their season opener against Rice Saturday afternoon. Students and fans gathered in the South Quad near the Rockne memorial on campus for a pep rally Friday afternoon.
The last couple weeks have had their ups and downs for the Fighting Irish because of an investigation into allegations of academic misconduct made against five football players and other students.
Three of the five players under investigation were expected to return as starters this season. None of the five are allowed to practice or play until the investigation is complete.
Head Coach Brian Kelly is expected to fill the holes with players like fifth year Florida transfer Cody Riggs.
"My physicality outside has helped me a lot. I'm not afraid of anything so I think that's what's been able to help me especially with this aggressive style of defense, but I want to prove myself at corner. I understand I have a big role here and I want to take on the challenge," said Riggs.
Saturday will be the 85th time Notre Dame Stadium will serve as the venue for the Irish home opener. It is the first time the team will play on the new artificial turf installed this summer.
