Notre Dame pushes for transparency with AI technology

NOW: Notre Dame pushes for transparency with AI technology

NOTRE DAME, Ind. —Pope Leo XIV is calling for regulation in AI and how our society uses it after releasing his encyclical titled "Magnifica Humanitas."

This comes 135 years after Pope Leo XIII released an encyclical on the Industrial Revolution. One Notre Dame Professor says the timing is not a coincidence because this is a modern-day revolution.

Pope Leo touches on many spaces the AI world is impacting and emphasizes that we need regulation and a better understanding of this technology in order to protect humanity.

Nitesh Chawla, Lucy Family Director for Data & AI Academic Strategy says Notre Dame is already taking steps to follow Pope Leo's Encyclical.

“My hope is that the encyclical broadens this conversation, which it would, which it should, inviting all of us to be collectively thinking about the challenges today the policymakers, technologists, and educators are facing, especially from the lens of transparency, accountability, evaluation, governance, and human impact, and those are the challenges the encyclical points out.”
