Notre Dame to host in-person commencement this May
The University of Notre Dame is planning to have its commencement ceremonies in-person the weekend of May 21, President Rev. John I Jenkins, C.S.C. announced Wednesday.
The university says it consulted with local health officials in making this decision.
“We believe at this time that it will be possible to safely host these events - with some modifications, of course - with and for our graduates, who will have been on campus all semester and therefore subject to regular surveillance testing and the many other public health protocols that are in place,” Father Jenkins wrote in the announcement.
He said the university will reassess as the date approaches.
The university says initial plans would allow a limited number of family members and guests to the ceremonies. Those who are unable to attend in person will be able to watch online.
The planned celebration for the Class of 2020 on Memorial Day weekend has been cancelled.
A celebration will be held in summer 2022 for those who received bachelor’s degrees in 2020.
The in-person Notre Dame Alumni Association reunions in June have been canceled, but virtual offerings and smaller reunions may be held in the summer and at other times.
