NOW: Oak Street Health opens a new facility in Mishawka

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - A primary care center is expanding with another facility in Mishawka. Oak Street Health aims at taking care of adults 65 years and older on Medicare.

“In 2021, we opened the La Salle Park on Western Avenue and a lot of our patients from Mishawka had to travel that far to get to us and we felt it would be more convenient to bring them their own Oak Street Health right here in Mishawka to serve this community,” MD and Senior Medical Director for Oak Street Health Glendora Pompey said.

Since its founding in 2012, Oak Street Health has expanded to 190 centers in 23 states. This will be the 12th center in Indiana, which will serve people around St. Joseph County.

Dr. Glendora Pompey says the main focus is to keep the patients strong, happy, independent and healthy.

“Our main focus is about prevention and what needs to happen, what barriers need to be removed so each patient can get prevention care. We do very close surveillance with our patients, we do screenings, we make sure they’re up to date on those and that allows us to know our patients more intimately and be able to catch things before they develop.”

The center offers patients longer appointment sessions as well as behavioral health and psychological support. They have a community room that offers exercise classes, technology classes, painting, bingo, Zumba and karaoke.

With the first day on Monday, Dr.Pompey says people can schedule tours to see the facility.

“On Monday we’re really going to be ready, standing at the door to welcome all the people. A lot of people signed up for welcome visits to come in and see what we’re about. And yet, we’re leaving room for more. We're just so excited to meet the community, have everyone that comes over that’s interested in seeing what we’re about.”
