Officer involved shooting reported on Portage Avenue

South Bend Police and St. Joseph County Police are on the scene of a shooting on Portage Avenue in South Bend.  An officer shot a suspect, according to St. Joseph County Police.

According to police, the suspect has been identified as Avery Ray, 26.

St. Joseph County Police say a hold-up alarm at the Check into Cash was tripped at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Ray ran into a wooded area near an apartment complex and an officer ran after him.

Police said Ray pulled out a gun and the officer shot the suspect in his lower extremities.

"It’s my understanding that the subject turned, faced the officers and pointed a handgun at them, and it’s my understanding at least one of the officers fired in self defense of himself and everyone else and struck the individual," said Lt. Dave Wells of the Metro Homicide Unit.

Ray was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

No one else was injured in the attempted robbery or the shooting.

"Everybody is okay. The only injury sustained in this whole mess is to the suspect," Wells said.

The northbound lanes of Portage Avenue are closed at Appaloosa Lane, but drivers can access the shops and the apartments.

The officer involved in the shooting has not been identified at this time.
