ELKHART, Ind. -- A driver was rescued from the roof of his vehicle by an officer after it went into the Elkhart River Thursday morning, according to Elkhart Police.

Around 8:30 a.m. the driver was heading eastbound on Jackson, turning southbound onto Goshen Avenue when his vehicle experienced mechanical issues.

The driver told police he couldn't steer the vehicle and drove into the Elkhart River at Goshen Avenue.

The driver got out of the vehicle and onto the roof of the car as it floated down the river.

An officer reached down over the sea wall at Jackson and Marine Avenue and pulled the driver to safety.

The driver was transported to the Elkhart General Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
