Officers and suspect exchange gunfire, suspect flees

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- Law enforcement agencies in Berrien County are searching for a suspect who exchanged gunfire with police following a pursuit, according to St. Joseph Charter Township Police.

A St. Joseph Police officer located a vehicle matching a "be on the lookout" alert in reference to an armed robbery in Berrien Springs Friday around 11:30 p.m.

The suspect led police on a pursuit and fired shots at officers from the moving vehicle.

The pursuit ended at Columbus and Division in Benton Harbor when the suspect vehicle turned towards an officer. The officer fired shots, but it is not believed the suspect was struck.

Police used K-9 officers to search for the suspect, but the suspect was not located.

No officers were injured in the incident.

St. Joseph Township Police were assisted by the Michigan State Police, Berrien County Sheriffs’ Department, Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety and the Benton Township Police Department.
