Officers arrest Elkhart teen for attempted murder

ELKHART, Ind. -- An Elkhart teenager, 18-year-old Guillermo Belmares, has been arrested for attempted murder stemming from the shooting of an investigator from the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office just after midnight on Wednesday on the 500-block of Sherman Street.

According to police, Investigator Dave Floerchinger came to Sherman Street to serve a warrant and was approached by a group of people.  Belmares allegedly fired a gun at Floerchinger and fragments hit the investigator and his car.

Neighbors, who wished not to be identified because of gang activity in the neighborhood, told ABC57 that they heard the blast and within minutes police swarmed Sherman Street.  According to neighbors, police found a 12-gauge shotgun in a nearby alley.

Investigator Floerchinger was taken to Elkhart General Hospital and later released.

Guillermo Belmares was arrested on Thursday, a probable cause hearing is scheduled for Saturday July 7.
