Officers negotiate with suicidal subject, offer help
St. Joseph, Mich. – Multiple agencies responded to reports of a suicidal elderly person Monday evening in Berrien County.
On Sept. 24, 2018 at approximately 5:00 p.m. authorities say they received a call regarding a suicidal 66-year-old resident of the 2800 block of Willa Drive who was allegedly making threatening statements.
The Berrien County hostage negotiating team attempted to open up communication with elderly subject.
After failing to make contact with the person-of-interest, officers from St. Joseph Public Safety and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department approached the subject’s home.
The suicidal person unlocked the door for the officers as they approached the residence.
Police say the suicidal subject made contact with officers with the situation ending peacefully.
The subject was taken to Lakeland Hospital for evaluation.
No word on the condition of the subject.
The Berrien County Sheriff Department’s road patrol, Medic 1, St. Joseph Department of Public Safety and the Berrien County Sheriff’s negotiating team assisted at the scene.
