Oldest hippo in captivity dies at southern Indiana zoo

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- A zoo in southern Indiana is mourning the loss of one its longest residents.

Donna the hippo was the oldest hippo in captivity.

She spent more than 50 years at the Mesker Park Zoo in Evansville.

Zookeepers had to put down the Nile hippopotamus because of her failing health.

"What I want people to do is remember Donna in her hey day in her vibrance," Amos Morris, zoo director, said. "She lived a wonderful life here."

An animal autopsy is planned.

Donna was 62-years-old.
