Sautéing, skin care, hair growth...olive oil has a myriad of purposes, but according to findings presented at the American Society for Nutrition, on Monday, olive oil has shown to reduce dementia mortality risk.
The study was led by the presenting author Anne-Julie Tessier, RD, PhD, from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Evidence has previously shown that olive oil holds a beneficial role in cardiovascular health, mortality and potentially cognition.
However, olive oil intake directly related to dementia had not been previously studied.
The study used 60,582 women and 31,801 men free of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Their diet and food frequency were also evaluated.
Results found that if people replace margarine or mayonnaise with olive oil, then they could have a 5% to 12% lower risk of dementia.
