One injured in structure fire in Union Pier

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. – One man was injured in a structure fire at a residence early Wednesday morning, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office reported.

In the early morning hours of June 30, emergency responders were called to the 15000 block of Locke Road in Chikaming Township for reports of a fire.

When responders got to the scene, they entered the smoke-filled home and found the homeowner, a 55-year-old man, inside.

Responders safely assisted the disoriented homeowner out of the house.

The man suffered smoke inhalation and significant 3rd degree burns across his body. He was treated at the scene by paramedics but was ultimately taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

The fire was controlled by firefighters from Chikaming Township Fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, police said.

No emergency personnel were injured in the incident.
