One killed, one injured in Starke County off road vehicle crash

BASS LAKE, Ind.—A woman was killed and a man was injured in an off-road vehicle crash near Bass Lake Beach on Sunday, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Law Enforcement.

On September 20, around 5:52 p.m., officers were called to State Road 10 near Bass Lake Beach for a serious ORV crash involving injuries.

The passenger, Misty Staton, 39, of Knox, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Indiana DNR.

The driver, a 28-year-old man from Knox, was taken to the local hospital for treatment of a head injury.

Witnesses told investigators that they saw a side-by-side style off-road vehicle traveling on S.R. 10 when it “failed to negotiate a turn at a high rate of speed,” the DNR said.

The ORV left the road, rolled and both occupants were ejected, according to the DNR.

Helmet and seatbelts were not worn at the time of the crash, the DNR said.
