One person dead after vehicle, pedestrian crash in Benton Harbor

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. – A pedestrian has died following a vehicle crash Monday afternoon, the Benton Charter Township Police Department reported.

At 11:25 a.m., officers were called to the area of Cinema Way and Orchard Crossing in Benton Harbor for reports of a personal injury crash.

At the scene, officers found the victim, a 73-year-old Benton Township resident, laying unconscious in the road.

After using all life-saving efforts, the person was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Upon investigating, police learned that the collision happened when the victim was trying to cross Orchard Crossing as a vehicle was turning onto Orchard Crossing.

The driver of the vehicle, a 79-year-old Stevensville resident, was not injured in the crash and is cooperating with police, reports said.

Police said they do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Once it’s complete, the investigation will be turned over to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review of any potential charges.
