One person injured in chemical leak at hospital

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- One person was injured in a chemical leak at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Michigan around 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Hospital officials said someone poured drain cleaner down a drain. Not long after, the pipe in a ceiling burst and the drain cleaner leaked onto the walls.

One person did come in contact with the sulfuric acid in the drain cleaner.

HAZMAT crews isolated the chemical leak as soon as they arrived on scene.

One person suffered mild skin irritation and was treated in the emergency department.

The St. Joseph Department of Public Safety did not know what caused the pipe to burst but said it was not weather related.
