One person killed in fatal buggy accident in Elkhart County

Goshen, Ind. – One person was killed in a fatal accident involving an SUV and a buggy near Goshen.

The accident happened at the intersection of County Road 31 and County Road 38. The horse-drawn buggy was traveling south on County Road 31 when it collided with the SUV heading eastbound. Three occupants of the buggy were ejected onto the roadway.

An Amish man, Marion Yoder, 59, was killed. His wife Edith Yoder, 53, and 8-year-old grandson Caleb have been hospitalized.

Caleb Yoder was transported to Memorial Hospital and is in critical condition with bleeding on the brain.

Edith Yoder received several broken bones and is expected to recover. ABC 57 has learned Marion and Edith have 11 children.

The SUV driver Joshua Smoker, 34, was also hospitalized.

The intersection is back open at this time. The Elkhart County Fatal Alcohol Crash team is investigating. No enforcement actions were taken at the scene.
