UPDATE: One injured, two cats dead following Tuesday morning house fire
UPDATE: The Clay Fire Department reports just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday, crews responded to a house fire in the 13000 block of South Lexington Circle in Granger.
Upon arrival, crews say they encountered an active fire in the home's basement.
Fire officials say the fire was quickly under control and contained to the basement.
Five people were inside the home at the time of the fire.
Officials say four people were able to evacuate the home on their own.
Firefighters successfully removed one man from inside the home shortly after arrival.
The man was then taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for medical treatment.
Fire officials say they did find two cats dead inside the home but were able to rescue three other cats.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and the St. Joseph County Police Department are currently investigating the incident.
The cause and origin of the fire have yet to be determined, and no further information is available at this time.
ORIGINAL: ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- One person is in the hospital after a house fire Tuesday morning.
The Clay Fire Department was called to the 13000 block of South Lexington Circle just before 1:10 a.m.
A male was transported to the hospital while three other family members escaped the fire.
Flames were quickly extinguished by crews on scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
