Overnight storms cause power outages in Michiana

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- Thousands of people are without power due to heavy storms sweeping through parts of Michiana early Monday morning.

Indiana Michigan Power reports that 292 customers in Cass County are without power.

Over 1,500 people are without power in La Porte County, that number has decreased throughout the early morning hours from over 2,000 customers.

I&M officials say many of the outages in La Porte County are due to lightning striking a substation causing a transformer to blow.

I&M also reports that a mobile transformer is scheduled come in to replace the old transformer, and customers could be without power until 6 p.m.

St. Joe County did have a report of 500 outages, but are now in the clear.
