Panera Bread on South Bend’s south side to relocate to former Steak’n Shake

Panera Bread in Erskine Village will move across the street at the end of the summer in 2020, according to Panera Bread project manager.

SOUTH BEND, Ind.—The Panera Bread on South Bend’s south side will soon have a new home.

Demolition of the former Steak’n Shake restaurant at 1315 E. Ireland Road was underway on Wednesday. A bulldozer was parked in the parking lot around lunchtime.

Construction on the restaurant that will move to the property, a new Panera Bread, is set to begin on March 16.

Panera Bread will relocate from its current location across the street in Erskine Village in August or September of 2020, according to a senior development project manager at Panera.

The existing Panera at 1290 E. Ireland Road will close as the new café’s opening date nears. It’s unclear if there will be a lapse in service when the restaurant makes its move.
