Passenger in intensive care after crash in Niles

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department responded to a serious injury accident early Sunday morning.

The accident happened around 3:35 a.m. at the intersection of 11th street and Bell road.

Deputies say the driver of a Pontiac attempted to cross the intersection and was struck by a large box truck heading south on 11th street.

The car came to a rest on the street but was then struck by a Volkswagen traveling north on south 11th street, officers say.

A 33-year-old female passenger that was in the Pontiac suffered serious injuries and was transported to Memorial Hospital’s intensive care unit.

The driver of the Pontiac suffered minor injuries and the other two drivers were not injured.

Officers say the investigation shows that the driver of the Pontiac failed to yield the right of way.

Alcohol and speed were not factors in this crash.

The investigation is ongoing and being handled by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit.
