Passerby saves house after seeing flames, calling SBFD

South Bend Fire Department

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A lucky homeowner will likely be looking to shake the hand of the passerby who spotted flames and possibly saved their home from flames Tuesday afternoon.

The South Bend Fire Department says a person who happened to be passing by around 2:30 p.m. on July 15 noticed flames coming from a home in the 1200 block of College Street and called 911.

"When SBFD crews arrived, flames were visible from a back corner window of the home," fire crews said.

"Our crews made an offensive attack and quickly located the fire in the kitchen area. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes."

SBFD says no one was inside at the time and no injuries were reported, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
