Pedestrian killed on Toll Road in LaGrange County Monday night

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. – A pedestrian was struck and killed while walking along the I-80/90 Toll Road Monday night, Indiana State Police reported.

At 11:45 p.m., troopers were notified of a person walking on the Toll Road near mile marker 121 in LaGrange County.

While troopers made their way to the scene, two more 911 calls came in saying a semi-tractor trailer had struck an object in the road in the same area and that the object was possibly a person.

The first troopers arrived at 12:04 a.m. and found a man, later identified as 43-year-old Nathanael W. Stewart of Angola, lying unresponsive in the road.

CPR and other life-saving measures were started immediately but Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol and drugs were not suspected in the cause of the crash but the driver of the semi-tractor trailer voluntarily submitted to chemical testing as part of the standard investigative process required by law.

Troopers have not yet determined why Stewart was walking on the Toll Road but found footprints in the snow that suggested he climbed over from the north side of the interstate fence, walked through the side ditch, and onto the road, according to reports.

This is an ongoing investigation.
