MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Penn girls basketball knows how to get it done in the postseason. The 2016 state champions began what they hope is another title run, beating rival Mishawaka in the opening round of 4A sectionals.
The 50-39 victory was head coach Kristi Kaniewski Ulrich's 200th in her career, reaching the milestone mark in just her ninth season leading the Lady Kingsmen.
"[I'm] just really blessed to have been able to coach a lot of great players and have a lot of great families and a lot of great coaches on my staff the last nine years," Ulrich said after the game. "The administration here, and everybody that's a part of Penn is a part of these victories. They're not just mine, they're everyone's that have been a part of it."
Penn advanced to the sectional semifinals on Friday night. They will meet Riley, who beat cross-town rival Clay 56-35.
The other semifinal that night will feature St. Joe and LaPorte.
