Pickup truck slams into Elkhart home following high speed chase
ELKHART, Ind. – A high speed chase comes to a screeching halt after a stolen pickup truck slams into an Elkhart home.
It happened around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on Plum Street.
According to police it was a high speed pursuit that started near the Cassopolis and Bristol Street intersection with a driving infraction.
The truck took off and after a few minutes turned down an ally, hit a utility pole and spun into the back of the house.
Several witnesses say they were in shock by the crash, after they heard a loud bang and looked out their windows.
"I was in the house and heard something I thought was a small explosion and I immediately rushed out and within a couple seconds I saw a couple of cop cars zooming by," said Dustin Barnard.
Power lines hanging were lying on top of the truck at one point, which was a big concern for firefighters who had to cut a man and a woman out of the truck.
According to the Elkhart City Battalion Chief, crews were able to get both out of the truck before shutting off power to the hanging electrical lines. They were taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with non-life-threatening injuries
"When you turn and run from the police I'm not going to say bad things are going to happe, however you’re best to just pull over so we don't see something like this,” said Elkhart City Fire Chief Wes Johnson.
There was a woman inside the home but she is expected to be alright.
