Police arrest 21-year-old suspect for discharging firearm into a building

Darnell Ford

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department reports on Wednesday night, officers from the Warrants Division, Patrol Division, and the Mishawaka Police Department worked together to find and arrest 21-year-old Darnell Ford.

Ford was arrested in the 4000 block of Glenellen Court at Edison Pointe Apartments in Mishawaka.

Ford was wanted for an active bench warrant regarding a Jan. 21,2023, incident where a residence was struck by gunfire.

Ford was charged with Criminal Recklessness, discharging a firearm into a building, and Resisting Law Enforcement.

Authorities say on Jan. 21, 2023, officers with the South Bend Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter activation at W. Napier Street. While officers were responding, a call came in saying a residence had been struck by gunfire.

Court documents states officers then spoke with the occupants of W. Napier Street, who explained their residence was struck by gunfire, with the projectiles having traveled through both occupied and unoccupied rooms.

No suspect info was given at that time.

On Jan. 22, 2023, around 1:42 p.m., Ford was arrested for an unrelated offense. During his arrest, authorities say Ford was found to be in possession of a black Springfield XD 9mm semi-automatic handgun bearing S/N BA7189987.

Police say the handgun was sent to the SBPD's ballistics lab for evidence processing. After being test fired, it was learned the spent casings collected from the scene of this incident correlated to Ford's firearm.

Police say on Jan. 26, 2023, security camera footage collected from W. Napier Street was reviewed.

Court documents state the security footage, two subject come into the frame, with the man in the front wearing a white baseball cap, appearing to have shoulder length dark hair, a white long sleeve shirt, a lighter color vest, lighter color pants, and white shoes.

Documents state the second man is behind a car and all you can see is a man wearing a white t- shirt.

Police say you can then hear one of the men states, “This is it's this one," as he starts to walk back towards the right side of the camera frame. Documents state immediately after walking out of the view of the camera, you can hear multiple shots fired.

After reviewing Ford's booking photograph for his arrest, and the photograph of Ford used in a Crime Information Bulletin (CIB) for another investigation being handled by the Violent Crimes Unit, police reviewed the security footage a second time.

Police say upon reviewing the footage for a second time, they determined the man closest to the camera in the footage appeared to be Ford.

Immediately after reviewing the footage, police requested SBPD's Intelligence Unit to look through Ford's social media for any photographs or videos depicting Ford wearing a similar outfit.

The SBPD Intelligence Unit located a video posted to a YouTube account associated with Ford depicting him wearing an outfit consistent with what is seen on the security footage.

Police say the post was made to YouTube on Jan. 24, 2023, at 2:44 a.m., approximately three days after the shooting on Napier Street and three hours after Ford was released from the St. Joseph County Jail.
