Police: Elkhart man attempts suicide while in back of cruiser

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- An Elkhart man is facing charges after cops say he tried to hurt himself while in the back of a police car.

South Bend police told ABC57 33-year-old Tolle Tee was drunk and stumbling outside a bar on Miami Street just after 10 Monday night.

While getting arrested, officers say he begged them to kill him. Then while in handcuffs, in the police cruiser, officers say he was able to wrap a seat belt around his neck.

He was unconscious when police unwrapped the belt from his throat. Tee was taken to Memorial Hospital, to get a mental evaluation.
