Police: Father accused of shooting 6-year-old son

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A child is recovering in the hospital after he was shot late Thursday evening at a home on North Olive Street.

Police say a father shot his 6-year old child after an argument.

The 6-year-old's uncle, Jerome, says he was the intended target of the shooting.

He says he argued with the father and told him he needed to take better care of the boy.

"This dispute escalated. It ended outside of the house. At which point the father turned to the other relative, fired a shot," said Phil Trent of the South Bend Police Department.

He missed his target, but the bullet ended up hitting his 6-year-old son in the leg.

"My niece started hollering. I didn't know what was going on," said Jerome.

The boy was taken inside the house while they waited for an ambulance.

Police are searching for the boy's father, the one they say pulled the trigger. He has been identified as Kenny Dawaine Lee.

"We have not been able to locate him just yet, but we have circulated his image and descriptors," said Trent.

Lee was charged Friday afternoon with attempted battery and criminal recklessness. If you know where he is, contact the South Bend Police Department.

The child is expected to be ok.
