Police pursuit with stolen Porsche ends in crash with one arrest

Shay A. Palmer

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports a Highway Interdiction Deputy was monitoring westbound traffic at mile-marker 53 on I-80/90 around 5:15 p.m. Thursday when he saw a Porsche pass by traveling too closely behind a commercial motor vehicle.

The report states that's when the deputy pulled out of the median, at which point the Porsche merged into the passing lane to overtake the CMV, before rapidly accelerating.

Authorities say the deputy then activated his emergency lights to attempt a traffic stop.

The Porsche failed to yield, leading to a motor vehicle pursuit.

Authorities say traffic began to slow and merge into one lane due to construction near mile-marker 49.

The Porsche remained in the inside lane and began passing a line of vehicles.

The report states as the Porsche approached the S.R. 39 exit, it swerved right and traveled between two vehicles in the line of traffic.

While doing so, authorities say the Porsche struck the rear of a van, before it continued off the north side of the interstate before stopping in a ditch.

The driver, later identified as 31-year-old Shay A. Palmer of Muskegon, Mich., exited the Porsche and refused to comply with the deputy's commands, authorities said.

The report states Palmer began running north from the scene before running uphill, through a meadow, and into a tree line, where assisting deputies converged and secured a perimeter in the 1300-west block of C.R. 450 North.

Palmer was soon located, taken into custody, and taken to an area hospital for medical clearance before being taken to the La Porte County Jail.

PALMER was arrested for the following offenses, Auto Theft, a Level 6 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement w/motor vehicle, a Level 6 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, a Class A Misdemeanor, and Reckless Driving, a Class B Misdemeanor.

Palmer remains in jail and is being held on a $755 cash-only bond through Circuit Court.

No injuries were sustained in the crash.
