Police searching for driver who hit teen and drove off

Berrien County Sheriff's deputies and Niles City police are trying to find a young woman who they say hit a teenaged girl with her car and then drove away.

Police say the 16-year-old girl was walking home along Franklin Woods Tuesday night when a silver sedan hit her.

The teen tells police the woman initially started to help her after the accident, but then took off.

The girl told police the driver, described as a woman in her mid 20s, between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-5, no more than 120 pounds,  with brown or blond hair.

The teen was taken to the hospital to be treated for a bump on the head and some minor injuries to her wrists and arms. She was released early Wednesday morning.

Police say the suspect's vehicle might have damage to the front driver's side headlight, hood or quarter panel. It's possible she was driving a Chevy Impala.

Anyone with information about the identity of the driver of the hit and run vehicle is encouraged to call the Berrien County Sheriff's Dept. at (269) 983-7141 or Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP.
