Police warn of Craigslist scam

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. –Benton Township Police are investigating a pair of robberies involving people who were selling items on Craigslist.

According to police, on March 26 and March 27, there were similar incidents involving sellers on Craigslist.

Police say the suspect contacts a seller on Craigslist by email or phone and arranges to meet so the suspect can view the item, or purchase it.

In both instances, the suspect arranges to meet the seller at the Briarwood Apartment Complex in Benton Township.

When the seller arrives, the suspect takes the item being sold under the guise of inspecting it, but then walks off with it.

If the seller attempts to stop the suspect, the suspect pulls a firearm and flees.

Police say the ruse or location could change.

The suspect is described as a black man with a light complexion, in his 20s, 6’1” tall and skinny with facial hair. The suspect also wears a hooded sweatshirt.

If you have any information in either of these cases, contact the Benton Township Police at 269-926-8221 or Crime Stoppers at 800-342-7867.
