BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Present Pillars is now celebrating a fresh start in a new facility after its previous location was condemned by the city of Benton Harbor.
James Gunter, co-founder and executive director of Present Pillars, said the nonprofit helps men and fathers access the tools and resources they need to build stable lives and stronger families.
"Kind of what that means to me is we have to, one, start young, but also pay attention to the man behind the dad. So, it's not about our ability to perform as a dad, but our ability to be well as a man," Gunter said.
The nonprofit offers fatherhood support, expungement assistance, wellness programs, and youth violence intervention services.
"Present Pillars has impacted my life by making me feel more present, more aware of my kids' lives, and just enjoying the fact that we have a spot where men can come and just be men, and I enjoy it," said Charlie Patterson, a Present Pillars participant.
Leaders said this new facility gives them the space to expand their programs while creating a safe place where men can connect, learn, and grow together.
"We have everything. We can work on our physical wellness. We can work on our mental wellness in groups. We can come here to build bonds and have more cohesion, and it's just a place to gather," said Gunter.
Leaders said they hope the new building will allow the organization to reach even more fathers while continuing to strengthen families across the Benton Harbor community.
Gunter said the best way to support Present Pillars is to show up, participate in its programs, spread the word and continue supporting its mission.
