Project SAFE kicks off in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. -- October is Fire Prevention Month and safety is key for several local Red Cross and fire departments.

The Elkhart Red Cross and local firefighters are hosting a campaign called Project SAFE. SAFE stands for Smoke Alarms For Everyone.

On Saturday, nearly 700 people will go door to door in counties around Michiana to make sure your smoke alarms are working and your home is not at risk.

The counties participating in the project are Elkhart, St. Joseph, Marshall, Koscuisko and Lagrange. They will be out from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
