SAINT JOSEPH, Mich. - The sun was out Tuesday, August 15 at Silver Beach, but that didn’t mean it was a good day for a dip in the lake.
Red flags waved to warn beach goers to avoid the water due to the strong waves, just days after one Illinois man lost his life in the lake at the Warren Dunes State Park.
The popular lake destination declared a high swim risk Tuesday morning.
Those who don’t stay out of the water when red flag waves are present could be kicked off the beach and face fines up to $500.
So, while windy weather may be good for surfers and kite surfers, Jill Adams the Berrien County Parks Director says swimmers should never take the risk no matter their skill level.
She advises anyone who wants to come out and enjoy the lake to educate themselves of weather and potential dangers.
“I always encourage people to check out the great Lakes beach hazard statement before coming to the beach and while they're here it gives great information the water temperature of the air temperatures Lake Michigan and there’s a nice map,” she said.
The Great Lakes Surf and Rescue Project reports drownings across Lake Michigan are down 33% from this time last August, but summers not over yet.
