Remembering Rio: Cookies and Canvas for the Heart raises awareness for children’s mental health

ELKHART, Ind. -- Families gathered at the Lexington Events Center to remember a young life lost and to spread an important message about children’s mental health and bullying.

The event, called Remembering Rio: Cookies and Canvas for the Heart, honored the life of Rio, a 12-year-old Elkhart native whose death brought renewed attention to the impact bullying can have on young people.

Throughout the day, families took part in activities like face painting, board games and music, giving children and parents a chance to come together in a positive environment while also talking about difficult topics.

The goal of the gathering was to encourage open conversations about children’s mental health and the warning signs families and communities should watch for.

ABC57 spoke with Rio’s father during the event about why continuing these conversations is so important.

Aaron Ball, Co-Founder of Rio's Rainbow, says people shouldn’t wait for a tragedy before getting involved and encourages parents, teachers and neighbors to reach out, support one another and help create safer environments for children.

Organizers also emphasized that it’s normal for families and community members to feel anger, fear or sadness after a loss, but those emotions can be channeled into action—supporting one another and raising awareness.
