Residents awaiting answers on key questions in Ultium Cells project

Residents and environmentalists are still waiting for some questions to be answered about the $2 billion electric vehicle battery plant proposed for New Carlisle.

St. Joseph County delayed the next vote by two weeks so some of the lingering questions.

Residents want to know how all the extra truck traffic on SR 2 will be handled.

There are also concerns about the long-term impact on the Kankakee aquifer, which supplies water to residents.

"There is always a chance for an accident, not intentional but is there something in that battery production that if it does get into our aquifer there, or even into the soil, that say come time for redevelopment in 30 or 40 years we become the next brownfield," said Dan Caruso, with the Open Space and Agricultural Alliance.

The county will vote on tax breaks for the project on September 27.
