ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department is asking drivers to avoid Douglas Road between Capital Avenue and Bittersweet Road Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say there are currently whiteout conditions, and several vehicles are in ditches or have slid off the roadway.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area until conditions clear.

This section of Douglas was closed on Tuesday morning following five vehicles getting stuck.

After those initial vehicles were cleared from the road, county highway crews cleared more snow and dropped more salt.

Drivers are advised to keep an eye out for blowing and drifting snow, especially on roads in open areas.

Drivers are also asked to turn your headlights on and take it slow at intersections.
