Round Barn rehabilitates a historic church into a restaurant and tasting room

NILES, Mich. - Round Barn winery, distillery and brewery are growing as they were green lit for their third location, a church.

Niles City Council approved a tax abatement, on Monday, September 25, for Round Barn to rehabilitate United Grace Methodist Church.

Under the approved tax abatement, the current taxable value of the property will freeze for 10 years, to compensate for the $1.3 million cost to rehabilitate the church and meet state restaurant and tasting room laws.

School operating tax and State Education Tax (SET) are still levied on the property.

Once abatement terms are complete, the property will be reassessed, increasing the tax value of the city.

Niles Community Development Manager Ryan Millin is delighted to welcome Round Barn to Niles.

"This investment in the city is a wonderful addition supporting our economic development efforts," she said. "It is expected to add 15 permanent jobs when the restaurant/tasting room is complete, in addition to the jobs of those accomplishing the renovation construction.”
