Roundabout crash sends one to the hospital, DWI charge pending for driver

ABC 57

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to the roundabout at C.R. 13, C.R. 18, and C.R. 115 around 5:44 p.m. Tuesday for a two-vehicle crash.

Authorities say a 2016 gray Jeep Renegade, driven by 30-year-old Mathew Powell of Elkhart, crashed into a 2021 Toyota Highlander, driven by a 52-year-old Leesburg man, who was stopped at the yield sign prior to entering the roundabout.

The report states the Renegade came up behind the Highlander at a high rate of speed before crashing into it.

Deputies say Powell fled the scene and the victim attempted to follow him. Shortly after, an off-duty deputy observed his vehicle with heavy damage.

Powell is being investigated for operating under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He was taken to the Elkhart General Hospital where the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities say charges are pending medical clearance for operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a crash.

Powell suffered facial lacerations, while the 52-year-old driver was uninjured.
