Rum Village neighborhood very icy after water main break

SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- A water main break in Rum Village has turned Scott Street into a frozen river. Neighbors said their water was turned off for four hours on Tuesday, but the city fixed the problem quickly.

“It was like what you see on the commercials where kids are grabbing brown water, that’s what it looked like. It was real bad,” said David Stone.

Stone said he saw water gushing from the ground around 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

“Water trickling out of the asphalt, I knew something was up but then it must have really broke,” Stone said.

Through the night Stone said his water was a brown color, but it got better after they patched the water line.

“Well you can’t see through it now, but it’s a lot clearer than it was,” Stone said.

Neighbors hope the temperatures warm up so the ice will melt soon.

“It’s a real big hassle. You’ve got elderly people living around here, they can’t get nowhere or nothing,” Stone said.
