Saint Mary's College employee arrested for voyeurism

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A male employee of Saint Mary's College, David Summerfield, was suspended without pay on Monday, and has been terminated for allegedly watching students in a restroom in Le Mans Hall.

On Monday afternoon, another college employee reported a 73 year old Summerfield may have been watching students in the restroom.

When superiors confronted the employee, he allegedly admitted to the behavior.

Summerfield was suspended without pay and escorted off campus on Monday.

School officials contacted the St. Joseph County Special Victims Unit and they conducted an investigation.

Summerfield was arrested for voyeurism Tuesday morning.

Saint Mary's College President Carol Ann Mooney notified students, parents, faculty, and staff about the situation.

In an email President Mooney wrote, “The safety, privacy, and security of our students are our primary concerns. This type of behavior is repugnant and Saint Mary’s College will not tolerate it. As soon as this was reported to us, we acted swiftly to remove the person from campus. We have taken measures that prevent anyone else from being able to spy into restrooms. In addition, we are evaluating all space on campus to ensure privacy.”

The president held an assembly on Tuesday to address concerns.
