Sandbags being offered across Michiana ahead of potential flooding
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – With There are more than a dozen places in Michiana where people can fill sandbags.
The sandbag station at Elkhart Street Department is open 24/7 but, is only open to Elkhart residents. However, there are several others scattered across the area. Anyone can stop by the Elkhart County Garage on CR 7, which is located half a mile north of CR 26 on the east side. Then, there’s the Boy Scout Camp Parking lot on CR 46, located west of SR 15.
Sandbags are also available at the Nappanee Street Department, on E. Wabash street, for neighbors who need them.
“We have activated our sandbagging stations around the county, as well as the cities, anybody needing sandbags welcome to get back for free and help themselves,” Jennifer Tobey the executive director of the Elkhart County Emergency Management said.
Meanwhile, in St. Joseph County, sandbags are available at county highway garages between 6 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. As well as Riverside Garage in South Bend, and Woodland Garage in Mishawaka.
Those who live in the Jewell Wood / Gilmer Park neighborhoods are also welcome to swing by the American Electric Power substation on Jackson road.
Other locations include the Clay Fire Department, Warren Fire Department-station 18, Penn Township-station 13, and the street departments in both South Bend and Mishawaka.
Keep in mind you do need to assemble the sandbags yourself, and it is recommended, that you bring a shovel.
