Scam alert in Niles, Michigan

The City of Niles says someone falsely claiming to be with the Niles Utility Department is calling businesses demanding payment or they will shut off the electricity to the business.
These scammers have been asking business owners to go to Martins and purchase a pre-paid card or to go to Martins to wire the payment.
The calls are not actually from the Niles Utility Department even though Niles City shows up on the caller I.D.
If you do receive a call like this, hang up the phone immediately and call the Niles Utilities Department's Customer Service or Billing offices directly.
That number is: 269-683-4700 ext. 8002 or ext. 8004
