Sea World makes scientific breakthrough

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Sea World recently made a scientific breakthrough when they successfully reproduced a penguin through artificial insemination.

At just 12 weeks old, she is the first of any penguin species to be reproduced in this way.

This is being noted as a major stride in conservation efforts that scientists are hoping will help threatened or endangered species in the wild.

"Artificial insemination and semen preservation allows us to maximize the genetic diversity of these populations, and that means that they remain healthy and stable into the future," said Justine O'Brien, of the Sea World Reproductive Research Center.
