PORTER COUNTY, Ind. – A search is underway for a man who went missing in Lake Michigan on Monday, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources announced.

At 5:30 p.m. CST, responders were called to West Beach at Indiana Dunes National Park for a report of someone in the water.

At the scene, responders learned that five people had gone onto shelf ice along the shore when the ice began to crack.

As the group retreated, one person fell into the water, reports said.

The group tried to reach their friend but large waves and unstable ice prevented them from reaching him.

Indiana Conservation Officers and other responding parties are searching for the man.

Conservation officers are reminding the public to stay off shelf ice on the lake, as it can be unpredictable and dangerous.
