ST. JOSEPH CHARTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A suspect is dead following a crash and pursuit with police that ultimately resulted in an officer-involved shooting.

St. Joseph Charter Township police were called to a welfare check for a semi-driver in the Fairplain area at Carronde Park and Riverbend Drive on Monday, shortly after 7 p.m.

When police arrived the 42-year-old driver from Tennessee allegedly crashed into a patrol vehicle, before driving away and crashing into a home on the 2300 block of Riverbend Drive.

Officers say when they followed the suspect to apprehend him, an altercation lead to one officer shooting his firearm and hitting the suspect.

The 42-year-old man was taken to Corewell Health Spectrum Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The officer who was involved was injured but is expected to recover, and is now on paid administrative leave.

Michigan State Police has been asked to investigate the shooting, but the agency was not involved in the incident.

The name of the suspect and officer involved are not being shared at this time.
