Sentencing postponed in deadly car crash into house

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A woman who drove her car into a house and killed a South Bend mother was scheduled to be in court for sentencing Monday, but it was delayed.

Police said 23-year-old Erica McCaffery was under the influence and speeding on Corby Boulevard back on April 20, 2012. When trying to turn west on Twyckynham Drive, she lost control and crashed into 56-year-old Barbara Knapp’s house.

Knapp was killed during the crash along with one of her dogs. Another dog ran from the scene and was later recovered by police.

McCaffery pleaded guilty to charges in early September.

Investigators said the house had to torn down the same day due to the amount of damage caused by the crash.
