September Full Moon: It's Harvest Time!

The Harvest Moon is the moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox.  So sometimes this moon falls in September and other times October.

Since we had TWO full moons in August, this one barely makes it into September!  But, our Harvest Moon for 2012 is tonight!

At the peak of harvest, farmers were able to work late into the evening thanks to the light of this moon (according to the Farmer's Almanac) so that is where it gets its nickname!

Other names for this moon include:

The Corn Moon, Full Barley Moon, Fruit Moon, Nut Moon, Chrysanthemum Moon, Mulberry Moon, Moon when Calves grow hair, Singing Moon, Moon of leaves turning color, Big Feast Moon and the Moon of Spiderwebs on the ground.

Enjoy!
