Several people fall through the ice on Lake Michigan

ST. JOSEPH, Mich.-- Six people in Grand Haven fell through the ice on Lake Michigan over the weekend.

As the temperatures have started to warm up in the past 48 hours, Coast Guard Officer George Melvan said the ice on Lake Michigan has started to melt.

Melvan said, “The ice thickness is very inconsistent out on the lakes especially this time of year and you never really know what you are walking on.”

Walking out on the ice to get a picture of the St. Joseph Lighthouse could be very dangerous.

“It is melting! Especially with the temperature fluctuations, it’s definitely a risk especially now," said Melvan.

The Coast Guard in Berrien County said they have been preparing all winter for ice rescues.
