Shallow St. Joe poses risk for boaters

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- The Saint Joseph River continues to be a problem for boaters.

Three boats recently got stuck in the river near Benton Harbor and had to be towed.

Employees at Great Lakes towing say that the sand-bar is still high even though that part of the river was recently dredged.

Boaters who know the area should be okay..

"Go slow! That's the biggest problem. Boats just going a little too fast and by the time time they hit the ground, it's too late. If you go slow, a lot of times you can feel yourself getting into the shallow water," Rich Lenardson of Great Lakes Towing said.

Given the conditions on the river, the company says they're expecting a busy summer.
